Christmas City of the North parade Friday

If you can’t wait until December to get your Christmas parade fix (Cloquet’s Home for the Holidays parade is Dec. 4), then head north tomorrow afternoon, for Duluth’s gala event.

When I worked at the Budgeteer and we had an office on Superior Street, my kids and I loved watching the parade from inside the office and out on the street. However, since I no longer have that luxury, I now make sure they are very warmly dressed, and some of those hand and footwarmers might be a good idea as well. After all, a person can get pretty cold just sitting or standing there for 90 minutes, no matter how heart warming the floats are.

Here’s the basic information on the parade, courtesy of the Duluth Police Department:

On Friday, November 19, 2010, the 52nd Annual Christmas City of the North Parade will be held on Superior Street in Downtown Duluth starting at 6:20 p.m.

The parade route will be the same as last year.  Parade units will assemble on Railroad Street.  The parade will travel east on Railroad Street to Lake Avenue, cross the Lake Avenue Viaduct, then turn west on Superior Street to the termination point at 5th Avenue West.

The only access to the D.E.C.C. from downtown, during the parade, will be 6th Avenue West to Michigan Street, east to 5th Avenue West, to Harbor Drive.   Motorists wanting to access the D.E.C.C. are encouraged to take I-35 and exit at 5th Avenue West.

Starting at 2:00 p.m., the only access to the Canal Park area and Minnesota Avenue will be from the Lake Avenue Viaduct to Canal Park Drive.

I-35 Northbound and Southbound exits onto Lake Avenue will be closed for duration of the parade, approximately 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.  Travelers going to Canal Park or Park Point will have to use alternate routes from the east to access Lake Avenue.

No Parking:

-Superior Street after 5:00 p.m. from 6th Avenue West to Lake Avenue, both sides.  This will include handicap zones.

-Michigan Street after 5:00 p.m., between 5th and 6th Avenues West, both sides. This will include handicap zones.

-Harbor Drive is no parking.

Cars parked in violation of the posted no parking may be tagged and towed after 5:00 p.m.

Detours:  Railroad Street between Canal Park Drive and Garfield Avenue will be closed starting at 2:00 p.m. to facilitate the set up of KBJR’s television coverage and the parade lineup.

-Lake Avenue South will be closed to northbound traffic at Buchanan Street.  Northbound traffic should detour to Canal Park Drive starting at 2:00 p.m.

-Superior Street traffic should use Michigan, First, or Second Streets during the parade.
